In the monastic library

A few years ago, I spent time at a Benedictine monastery, and the experience contributed to my formation as a Catholic and as a musician. While at the monastery, I prayed, dined with the community, and took part in the work routine. But, what impressed me most was the monks’ approach to liturgy.

Liturgy is for the sake of worship. One chants and prays; the organist is precise, the cantors well rehearsed, and the community sings with fervor. Afterwards, there is no congratulating one another on a fine job singing or preaching or chanting. They all simply return to their work.

Organist

St Patrick Church, Carlsbad CA

(2009-present)

Currently, I am an organist. This is a new adventure, because I am a pianist, and there are many interesting physical and visual challenges in adapting to an organ and its techniques.

My job consists of providing accompaniment for the adult, youth and children's choirs. In addition, I lead the music, from the keyboard, at one of the regular weekend masses.

Music Director

St Brigid Church, Hanford CA

(2003-2008)

When I was hired for this position, I relocated from San Diego. The season was fall and the temperature was dropping with each passing day. And then came the cold, foggy mornings.

Rising before dawn to arrive in time for the first Sunday mass, and driving through dense ground fog gave a new meaning to the phrase "dark night of faith."

There are as many ways to worship as there are faith communities, my preference is the traditional liturgy and music of the Church. I am also comfortable with contemporary worship music.

Our choir led the community in a variety of styles. I was fortunate to have a that put God first in their ministry service.

Music Director

Holy Family Church, San Diego CA

(2001-2003)

I was drawn to music ministry in the beginning by the beauty of the mass and by the reverent and contemplative chants of TaizĂ© prayer. Soon, I faced the challenges of working with diverse groups of singers and instrumentalists. The opportunity to lead music in this multi-cultural community was the first step in my ongoing growth, both as a musician and as a Christian.
